Four Dead In Plane Explosion At Jersey Shore

Police now confirm four people were killed in a mid-airplane explosion over Manahawkin, N.J., near Long Beach Island on Wednesday morning.

Wreckage of the plane, a single-engine Piper, was found off Route 72 east of the Garden State Parkway, according to police Capt. Charles Schweigart. The four occupants were dead, he said.

Witnesses reported seeing the mid-air explosion and debris was reported at the scene.

The plane was registered to Aviron Aviation LLC, in North Plainfield, according to Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. No further information was immediately available about it, he said.

Initially, authorities believed two people were on board.
